Being an April Fool’s Day baby has always felt like the joke is on me. Growing up, I hated the fact it landed on the day.
April Fool’s Day Baby
One year, I distinctly remember my group of friends making it an April Fool’s joke to pretend to forget my birthday all day, only to have a surprise party for me later that evening. Funny… I guess? I remember sauntering around the school halls all day feeling invisible. Even the school teachers were in on the joke.
Ever since that prank took place, I’ve dreaded the day as it approaches each year. Listen, I don’t mind getting older whatsoever (or more experienced, as I like to say). 🙂 Age has its advantages, including SO much more wisdom and a stronger grasp of the bigger picture of life, relationships, love, finances, work, and everything in between.
Sure, it comes with more wrinkles, gray hairs, and a lot more adulting – but overall, I sincerely enjoy growing older.
Anything But a Funny Girl
One thing hilarious about being born on this day? I am not funny whatsoever. Lol. Not even a little bit. Sure, I’d like to think I have a great sense of humor and adore a good laugh. But ask any friends and family, and they’ll tell you I probably make two good jokes a year. Maybe. Move over, Kristen Wiig.
For a day that celebrates practical jokes and all things funny, I couldn’t be less of aligned in terms of personal qualities and traits. Thankfully, God has seemed to bless me by surrounding me with some of the funniest people on the planet.
Bob? He is so fast and witty, and my face hurts constantly from him making me laugh all of the time. His family? Good gracious, they are all so funny, it’s wild. Family reunions are insane as I can’t even keep up with listening to the witty banter, much less making a half-good joke that more often than not creates that record scratch moment in room like, “wait, was that a joke? She tried, she tried!” 🙂
Another person in my life who’s freaking hilarious? Allie Provost. Being around her is pure joy. Sometimes she’s not even trying to be funny but making hilarious remarks. If she and Bob are in the same room? Forget about it. I literally have a stomachache the next day from giggling so much.
Shine Bright Like a Diamond
Thankfully, there is one gleaming beacon of hope when it comes to an April 1st birthday – our BIRTHSTONE. Friends, talk about a redeeming quality of the day, lol.
What is it?
DIAMOND.
Yassssss! I’ve never been one to overly care about fancy jewelry or precious stones. But let me tell you – it’s not a bad thing when people in your life try to buy something related to your birthstone (granted, it’s always the finest cubic zirconium pieces, of course). 🙂
April Fools’s Day Birthday – In Closing
So why do I bring this all up? Well, I still don’t really love celebrating my birthday. Bob goes out of his way to make it special, and this year is especially memorable for a variety of reasons that I’ll share in the months to come.
But for now, I’ll sit back and sip my coffee, avoiding the pranks and jokes online, and remember that sometimes it’s okay to be an April Fools Day baby.
In the end, I’d like to think we’re simply diamonds in the rough. We polish up real nice. 🙂
Before I go, if you haven’t had the chance to read it – check out my 30 things I learned in my 30’s post. I still stand by each one.
Cheers to another year ahead and (hopefully) increasing my joke quantity to three per year. I’ve got this! 🙂
Oh my sweet friend, with the exception of having an August birthday (birthstone peridot 🙄) I can identify with so much of what you wrote!! So happy birthday darling from an equally unfunny gal!
