Where to Stay on Nantucket

Nantucket Hotel Travel Guide

There is nothing quite like spending time on Nantucket in the summer. From its rich history, classic architecture, and incredible array of hydrangea and other blooms, the island makes for the perfect getaway. When traveling to “ACK,” there are two items that tend to come first: how to get there and where to stay on Nantucket.

How to Get to Nantucket

If you’re venturing to the island from the East Coast, taking a ferry is typically the easiest option. The most popular port is Hyannis, and there are high-speed ferries that can get you to the “Grey Lady” in an hour. New Bedford also has a (slightly longer) ferry option. There are even options that go back and forth between Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. Should you be traveling from further away, flying into Nantucket Memorial Airport (airport code: ACK) is the best way to go. In the past, we’ve flown to the island via Boston Logan, Newark, and New Bedford. I must say, the airport on Nantucket is my all-time favorite. It’s tiny (i.e. short lines), everyone is friendly, and there’s a casual restaurant that’s the perfect spot to relax before takeoff.

Where to Stay on Nantucket

Making a decision on where to stay on Nantucket is the hard part. Although the island is relatively small (less than 48 square miles), there are seemingly countless options. Resorts, bed and breakfasts, and hotels abound on the island, both in Town and in popular localities. For the past two summers, we’ve stayed at 21 Broad, and we’ve absolutely loved it. The location in Town is convenient to say the least. It’s one block from The Juice Bar (legendary ice cream), three blocks from Main Street, and a really short walk to the wharfs (i.e. ferries, shops, and more restaurants). Lastly, the Cisco Brewery shuttle pick-up is around the corner from 21 Broad!

21 Broad Hotel

What really sets 21 Broad apart are the design and amenities. Having opened in 2014, I love that it still feels new. The aesthetic is casually modern with pops of color throughout. Compared to many “traditional” hotel options on Nantucket, 21 Broad is an absolute breath of fresh air. Beyond the thoughtful design, the service is absolutely impeccable. Everyone is ready to help with anything – be it ideas for lunch or dinner, suggestions on which beach is a good idea, and everything in between. I had a small issue with a delay in a package being delivered, and the staff was kind enough to help redirect it back to Chicago after we had departed.

Even though 21 Broad is a boutique hotel, they have so many thoughtful touches that make it feel like you’re staying at a quaint B&B. Each morning, an array of small plate options are available for breakfast, there are multiple coffee stations in the building, and they serve warm cookies in the middle of the day. Early in the evening, they put out mixers and garnishes, in case you picked up something from the beverage store on Main Street. Lastly there are beach chairs, towels, and umbrellas for venturing out during the day.

There are a few different room types at 21 Broad. For both trips, we stayed in a King Deluxe and found it to be spacious and comfortable. Last summer, we were in the front of the building (overlooking Broad Street), and it was as quiet as our room this year (located in the back of the building). The rooms come complete with a mini-fridge (there’s a Stop & Shop on the Wharf), desk and sitting areas, as well as ample storage space.

When to Travel to Nantucket

Beyond making the choice of where to stay on Nantucket, it’s always good to determine when to go. Summer weekends and holidays are always busy. If you’re looking for a quieter (and more affordable) experience, consider a mid-week stay. During our sailing excursion, Captain Jim said that the weeks immediately after Labor Day are wonderful. At that time, the seasonal shops are still open, yet it’s a much more calm in Town and on the island. Regardless of how you get there or when you decide to travel, I definitely recommend looking into 21 Broad when determining where to stay on Nantucket!
