My first big task of 2021? Home organization and storage solutions. Thankfully, The Container Store Marie Kondo collection was unveiled this week, including 100+ items to tidy up your home. It is SO GOOD.
Have you made a New Year’s resolution around home organization? If so, this lovely line of products is for you. The Container Store and popular organization expert have partnered to provide a curated collection exclusively at ContainerStore.com. All of the products are based on Marie Kondo’s KonMarie method (more on her philosophy later)!
In the meantime, I personally love home organization! Last year, I documented some of the initial steps that we took to get our closets, pantry, garage, and beyond. However, I’m always on the hunt for new pieces to streamline our spaces and storage.
Who Is Marie Kondo?
In case you’re unfamiliar, Marie Kondo is a 36-year old Japanese organizing consultant. She’s a mother of two, and her organization philosophy is that your home should be rooted in all things joy.
In fact, you may have heard the saying, “sparking joy.” Frankly, those words are now in the cultural zeitgeist thanks to Kondo. Oh, and saying ‘thank you” to clothing. But I digress….
Beyond sparking joy, Kondo believes that everyone can transform their cluttered homes into serene spaces. The key to success is following her KonMarie Method, which includes six basic rules (more on that below).
In her spare time, she’s a #1 New York Times bestselling author of the book, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.” If that wasn’t enough, Time magazine named her one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World.
Marie Kondo’s Netflix Series
Furthermore, she’s the host of the Netflix popular series, “Tidying Up With Marie Kondo.” The Netflix show launched in January 2019, and follows the tidying home organizer. She travels to small towns to help families declutter their homes. I’m including the trailer to the show below. I highly recommended the show! Bob and I binged it in a few days!
Sadly, I heard that Netflix didn’t pick up the show for a second season. However, there are rumors that Kondo is casting for a new show. In fact, I believe you can still apply for to be on it!
Tidying Up Season Two
To apply or nominate someone, simply email your name, location, and contact information including email address to info@castingduo.com. Furthermore, they’re asking people includes photos along with some verbiage on the type of joy you want to spark. Here’s the catch – all applicants must be age 18+ and located in the Southern California area.
If Netflix doesn’t renew, my gut says that Kondo has signed with another network like Prime, Apple+, OWN, or possibly the new Magnolia Network. Time will tell!
KonMarie Method
What exactly is the KonMari Method? To be honest, it took me some time to understand every element (especially the unique folding technique). Simply put, while most home organization steps are based on location, Marie Kondo believes in organizing by category. Sounds difficult at first, right?
However, it’s pretty straight forward. You begin with clothes, followed by books, papers, komono (which are basically miscellaneous items), and, lastly, sentimental items.
Only keep only the things that spark joy. Otherwise, discard the items that don’t, and thank them for their service. Here are six basic steps to tidying up via the KonMari Method:
- Commit to tidying up
- Imagine your ideal lifestyle
- Finish discarding first
- Tide by category, not location
- Follow the right order
- Ask yourself if it sparks joy
Lastly, be sure to pick-up Marie’s book to learn more details about each step!
