EIGHT // NINE // TEN // ELEVEN // TWELVE // THIRTEEN
After social distancing for more than a month, I’ve watched my fair share of romantic comedies. I’m talking those tear-jerking, heart-melting movies with iconic phrases you won’t soon forget. “You had me at hello;” “The greatest thing is to love, and be loved in return;” “You make me want to be a better man;” “If you’re a bird, I’m a bird;” “I’ll never let go, Jack. I’ll never let go;” The list goes on and on. After rewatching these iconic films, I started to notice a trend. There are LOT of superb, stylish, and frankly timeless outfits. Plus, there’s plenty of casual, comfortable attire. It got me thinking, is it possible quarantine outfits can be inspired by romantic comedies?
The answer is YES! Seriously! In fact, after looking back at some of my favorite films from the past few decades, it’s astounding to see how many outfits look timeless and in some cases – trendy. Below, I’m sharing some examples of how to be inspired by apparel and accessories from your favorite romantic heroines.
SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE
While this 1993 film is known for romantic moments on top of the New York Empire State Building, Sleepless is Seattle is WAY ahead of its time with iconic social distancing outfits. Seriously. First, let’s talk about Meg Ryan gray lounge set. Timeless, comfy, cozy and perfect for lounging at home. Even her hair has that perfect “beach wave, no blowout” type social distancing vibe.
BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S
Even the iconic film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s (my all-time favorite film), Audrey Hepburn wears sweats! Gasp! Clutch your pearls ladies – Holly Golightly dons casual tops, white dress shirts, classic black cigarette pants, etc. Every single thing she feels classic, modern, fresh and totally timeless.
13 GOING ON 30
Who can forget Jennifer Garner’s starring role as Jenna Rink – the precocious 13 year-old struggling with never feeling old enough. In a “Freaky Friday” moment, she transitions from 13 to 30 years old. Even as an “adult,” she keeps fun printed pajama sets in the mix of her wardrobe. Frankly, these are the types of pajama sets I still own and love. Below are a few of my faves!
HITCH
Gah! I loved this movie so much. Will Smith and Eva Mendes light up the screen in this fantastic romantic comedy. Eva always looks elegant and glam, and it’s fun to see how she pairs neutrals in a fresh way. White, ivory, and beige apparel and accessories are always in style.
THE PROPOSAL
Please tell me you’ve seen this film! Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock are hilarious in The Proposal. To sum it up, they are co-workers turned fake “love birds” who decide to get engaged to save Bullock from being deported. Betty White even makes appearances throughout as Reynold’s Grandma Anna. I still laugh thinking about the “baby maker” blanket. While Bullock starts the movie wearing Louboutin heels and fitted suits, she quickly transitions to wearing comfy gear when visiting Sitka, Alaska. That plaid robe? Epic.
WAITING TO EXHALE
How phenomenal is this classic?! I always love watching the four friends navigate through love, friendship, careers, and beyond. This all-star female cast led by Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, Lela Rochon features an array of perfect outfits. I especially love their four looks below. Don’t these outfits make you want to grab a glass of champagne and watch a film?
LA LA LAND
While a newer addition to the romantic movie icons of all time, “La La Land” transported us to a jazz-filled, sunny paradise. But don’t be fooled by the yellow fit and flare dress, Emma Stone wears some casual outfits as well. An emerald t-shirt and gray joggers will always be in style!
UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN
Perhaps one of the “lesser” known films in this group is “Under the Tuscan Sun” featuring Diane Lane. I purchased this movie on my phone forever ago, and I’ve enjoyed having it on it ever since. Whenever I’m on a long flight, I play it and it puts me in a great mood. Her wardrobe throughout the film is flawless, and I especially loved seeing her looks as she redesigned her rural Tuscan villa.
BRIDESMAIDS
Are you ready to paaaaarttttyyy? This movie is as much about love as it is about friendships. Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph join a cast of comedy geniuses, including Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and Rose Bryne. From bridesmaid dress shopping to of course – that Wilson Phillips performance – the movie keeps you laughing one scene after another. The cast also makes a great case for casual and comfy gear, like this striped top by Kristen’s character, Annie. Stripes never go out of style (even during quarantine).
SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVE
This film just makes me smile. Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton prove that you can find love at any age. Not to mention, I adore any appearance by Keane Reeves. Diane is known for her classic turtleneck looks, and her wardrobe is impeccable throughout this film (same goes for the classic “Nancy Meyers” set designs). I especially love the ivory sweater and white pants (below). It’s a combo I love to wear on Nantucket (and certainly now at home).
LOVE & BASKETBALL
Set mostly in the 1990’s, this iconic sports-romance film is full of throwback outfits. If you’re looking for some retro athleisure inspiration, look no further. Plus, who doesn’t love a movie about childhood sweethearts who separate only to realize they were meant to be once again later in life?!
THE HOLIDAY
Who can forget Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz in the movie, “The Holiday?” If you haven’t seen it, RUN don’t walk. Beyond the great plot of the two women changing homes for a month around the holidays, the fashion is also spectacular! I especially love Cameron’s cozy cottage outfits like this cable knit sweater and lilac accessories look.
BRIDGET JONES DIARY
Sure, there are three total Bridget Jones Diary films, but it’s no secret she LOVES a robe, t-shirt, and pajamas. I love how she embraces cozy looks with friends, love interests and beyond.
CRAZY RICH ASIANS
No romantic comedy list is complete without “Crazy Rich Asians.” My love of this film is well documented on this blog, from “How to Dress like Astrid” (the glamorous cousin) to the main star, Rachel Chu (played by Constance Wu), and even the mom, Eleanor Young, and beyond. The one round-up I wasn’t able to post is Peik Lin (Rachel Chu’s fantastic college friend). Peik Lyn wears a lot of superb designer duds. They’re colorful and bold with playful prints. At the same time, they’re often relatively casual (with the exception of her cocktail dress and statement earrings that she keeps in her car, lol).
