Today, I’m thrilled to share our lake home closets transformation. This project is more than just a renovation. Ultimately, we want to reimagine our spaces to create a relaxing vacation home that’s as practical as it is picturesque.
Our vacation home is small in square footage, but mighty when it comes to design. Sure, it’s not the largest square footage home on the planet. However, we absolutely love the coastal meets calm vibe. It’s definitely ideal for weekend getaways and quality time with friends and family. Since it’s relatively quaint, every storage space is invaluable. When we purchased the home, it didn’t have a coat closet or closet in one guest bedroom.
As such, an important part of our renovation was creating custom lake home closets to suit our needs. We won’t be spending all of our time at the lake home, but we will visit quite frequently.

Our Lake Home Closets Makeover
If you’ve followed our journey for some time, you’ll know there’s only one brand we’d ever consider for the project – Inspired Closets Chicago. In addition to our primary bedroom closet, we also worked with them for the smaller closets in the bedroom. Every single element came together brilliantly, and the design has truly transformed our lives.
I’m thrilled to be working with Mike Carson and Inspired Closets Chicago again. Since his very first consultation, he’s been incredibly insightful and informative. Moreover, he was able to clearly explain the unique points of difference of Inspired Closets over the competition.
What really stood out to me was how well respected he is in the industry and investment in professional development. To be the best, you truly need to make time to continue to learn and innovate.
Primary Bedroom Closet
Our adventure begins in the primary bedroom, where we transformed a large, somewhat impersonal space into a luxurious bedroom suite. From the outset, our goal for the primary bedroom was to create more than just a sleeping area; we envisioned a holistic retreat that embraced the tranquility and beauty of the lake. The idea was to craft a space that offers a seamless transition from rest to rejuvenation, all while maximizing the stunning views and natural light offered by our unique location.
The highlight? A walk-in closet that’s a fashion enthusiast’s dream. Originally, the primary bedroom was a large, open space with two smaller, underutilized closets. The transformation began by reimagining this layout into a comprehensive suite. We broke down walls and reconfigured the layout to accommodate a cozy coffee bar, a serene bedroom space, a state-of-the-art primary bathroom, and a luxurious walk-in closet.
Some of the design highlights include:
Wallpaper: To infuse personality, we opted for a striking wallpaper that elevates the closet from a mere storage space to a style statement. The classic hue added a personal touch, elevating the closet from a mere storage area to a chic, personal space.
Sky-High Storage: Utilizing the full ceiling height, we incorporated racks, valet rods, shelves, and drawers, ensuring every inch serves a purpose. Amelia taught us this trick awhile ago, and always reminds us to build up to the ceiling when it makes sense. To be transparent, the added height increases the total cost of the closet. However, we love the fact we gain more storage. I also recommend investing in a stylish step ladder to get to the hard-to-reach places.
Guest Room Galore: Tailored to Tastes
The first guest room is a special space designed with our niece in mind. The closet here is not just for clothes and shoes; it’s a haven for toys, games, and her cherished Stuffiez. This space is perfectly tailored to grow with her while retaining its charm and uniqueness.
When we began conceptualizing this guest bedroom, our priority was to create a space that was comfortable and inviting. Additionally, we wanted to strike a balance between playful and practical. After all, the room must easily transition from a child’s haven to a teen’s retreat in the future. Now, she can store her clothes, accesories, Barbies, games, and craft materials. Later, she can use those shelves and racks to fill with other clothing and items.
A central inspiration for this room was the sophisticated yet playful wallpaper designs of Casa Branca. To complement the Casa Branca wallpaper, we decided to introduce an element of fun with striped wallpaper. This choice was not only visually appealing but also served to create a sense of continuity in the room’s overall design.
Brother’s Guest Room
The next guest room, envisaged for my immediate family, balances bold interior choices with a serene closet design. It’s a study in versatility, catering to diverse storage needs.
We prioritized adaptability in this closet. It needed to cater to diverse storage needs, accommodating both men’s and women’s items. The closet features ample hanging space, suitable for various garment types. Adjustable shelves were also key, ensuring space for different accessories. This flexibility is crucial for a multi-use guest room.
Despite its adaptability, the closet maintains a personalized touch. We chose neutral tones and classic hardware. These choices ensure the closet’s appeal across various tastes and preferences.
Lake Home Closets: The Linen Closet
The final piece of our closet puzzle is the linen closet. It’s often an overlooked space in many homes, and it’s become one favorite aspect of our lake home renovation. With ample shelving and smart organization, it’s the backbone of our guest amenities, ensuring comfort and convenience.
Having never once owned a home with a linen closet before (wild, right?!), the vision was clear but slightly ambitious. We wanted a space that was not just for linens but a versatile storage solution for a range of items. The challenge lay in making the most of the space while keeping it accessible and aesthetically pleasing.
Thankfully, Mike Carson’s expertise was invaluable in this project. His suggestions, particularly on how to utilize vertical space and integrate adjustable components, were game-changers. The 3D renderings he provided helped us visualize the potential of the space.
Inspired by the serene and natural surroundings of our lake home, the design of the linen closet had to be both tranquil and efficient. We chose a color palette that echoed the calm of the lake, with soft blues and whites. Ultimately, it created a sense of continuity from the rest of the home into this utilitarian space.
We introduced floor-to-ceiling shelving, ensuring ample room for linens, towels, and other essentials. To add a touch of personality, we chose unique, hand-picked hardware that complemented the overall design of the house. We also installed an integrated hamper for everyone to use while enjoying the lakeside retreat.
The Inspired Closets Chicago Experience
Working closely with Mike Carson has been a highlight. His professionalism and expertise shine through in every interaction. The showroom visit was an eye-opener, allowing us to touch, feel, and choose materials firsthand. The 3D renderings brought our ideas to life, making it easy to tweak and perfect each space.
The Value of Custom Closets
Investing in custom closets is a decision I’ll never regret. It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about creating spaces that work for our unique needs. Inspired Closets Chicago has been instrumental in achieving this, making them my go-to for all things storage.
